How to measure yourself for clothes
- Bust / chest: wrap the tape around the fullest part, keeping it level. Keep it snug, not tight.
- Waist: measure around your natural waistline, the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button.
- Hips: stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
- Measure over light clothing, and compare your numbers to the specific brand’s size chart before ordering, especially between sizes.
Women’s table follows Next’s published US size guide (US 2 = UK 6 = EU 34, stepping to US 20 = UK 24 = EU 52), cross-checked against PLT Outlet’s guide and the generic US/UK/EU dress-size table. Men’s table follows the standard published men’s chart (US 34 = UK 34 = EU 44 through US 44 = UK 44 = EU 54, XS through XL). Important: there is no single universal clothing standard. Brands cut differently, vanity sizing is real, and a US 8 can fit like a US 10 elsewhere. Treat conversions as a starting point and always check the brand’s own chart before buying.
How to use the converter
- Tell the converter who the clothes are for. Women’s and men’s sizes follow different scales, so this choice picks the right table.
- Pick the system you already know: US, UK, EU, or an alpha size. Type your size or choose it from the list.
- Press Convert. The result shows every equivalent size at once, and Copy result copies the row for your notes.
Understanding your result
The result is a full row across the systems: numeric US, UK, and EU sizes plus the alpha size. For women, each numeric size sits inside one alpha band, so the result also names the band. When the tool shows a “dup” note, your size sits on the boundary between two alpha rows, and either band is a plausible match. The brand’s own chart is the tie-breaker.
If the tool cannot place your size, it says so rather than guessing. Clothing has no single universal standard, and an invented answer would be worse than none. When a conversion looks odd, it is usually vanity sizing or a brand-specific cut, not a broken table.
Worked example
A shopper wears a women’s US 8 and wants the equivalents for a British retailer. She selects Women’s, chooses US, enters 8, and presses Convert. The result: UK 12, EU 40. She notes both, glances at the retailer’s chart for a second opinion, and orders the UK 12.

Frequently asked questions
Why do women’s US and UK sizes use different numbers?
They are different numbering traditions for the same body measurements. On the women’s scale used here, the UK number runs 4 higher than the US number: a US 8 is a UK 12, and the EU number runs 32 higher than the US number. Men’s numeric sizes work differently: US and UK chest sizes use the same number, and EU runs 10 higher.
What do alpha sizes (XS to XXL) mean?
Alpha sizes are bands that group numeric sizes for simpler labeling. One alpha row can span two numeric rows, which is why the converter sometimes shows a “dup” note: your size sits on a band boundary. Bands are wider than numeric sizes, so when fit matters, the numeric size is the more precise number.
Why does a US 8 fit differently in different stores?
Vanity sizing. Some brands cut generously so shoppers feel good in a smaller label, and a labeled US 8 can fit like a US 10 from a stricter brand. There is no enforced standard, so the converter translates numbering, not cut. The brand’s own chart is the tie-breaker.
Should I convert from my measurements instead of a size I own?
Yes, when you do not own the item type in any system. Measure bust or chest, waist, and hips with a tape, find the numeric size that matches your measurements on the brand’s chart, and convert from there. The measuring tips inside the converter cover tape placement for each point.
My size falls between two sizes. What should I do?
Check how the garment is meant to fit. For fitted items, many shoppers size down; for relaxed items, size up. Then confirm on the brand’s own chart, because some brands cut a full size away from the standard. Never assume the larger number always means more room: it usually does, but vanity sizing muddies the scale.
