How to measure waist and inseam
- Waist: wrap the tape around your natural waistline (or where you wear your jeans), snug but not tight. Keep one finger between the tape and your body.
- Inseam: stand straight and measure from the crotch down the inside of your leg to the ankle bone, or measure a pair of jeans that fits and lay them flat, buttoned, measuring along the inside seam.
- Measure your body, not a garment, and write down both numbers before shopping.
Men’s table follows Levi’s official size guide: US waist = UK waist (W32 = W32) and EU = waist + 16 (W32 = EU 48). Women’s table follows Levi’s: US 24 to 34 = UK 6 to 16 = EU 34 to 44. Honest caveats: vanity sizing is strong in jeans, so a labeled W32 often measures 33 or more; rigid non-stretch denim feels snug and relaxes with wear, so size up in stiff styles. Inseam is not converted (an inch is an inch everywhere), it is echoed for a complete WxL pair. Always check the brand’s own chart before buying.
How to use the converter
- Choose men’s or women’s. The two use different waist scales, so this picks the right table.
- Enter your body waist in inches: the tape around your natural waistline or where you wear your jeans, not a garment’s label.
- Enter your inseam in inches and press Convert. The result shows the US, UK, and EU waist sizes and the complete WxL pair.
Understanding your result
For men, US and UK waist sizes are identical: W32 is W32 in both systems, because both number the waist in inches. EU is the waist plus 16, so W32 becomes EU 48. For women, the scale runs US 24 to 34, mapping to UK 6 to 16 and EU 34 to 44.
Inseam is echoed, not converted: an inch is an inch everywhere, so the converter pairs your waist result with your inseam to give the full pair, like 32×32. If you enter an odd waist such as 33, the tool snaps to the nearest charted size and tells you which way it rounded.
Worked example
A shopper measures a 32 inch body waist and a 32 inch inseam. He selects men’s, enters 32 and 32, and presses Convert. The result: US W32, UK W32, EU 48, full pair 32×32. He checks the brand’s chart as a second opinion and orders the 32×32.

Frequently asked questions
Why are men’s US and UK jeans sizes the same number?
Because both systems number the waist in inches for men: W32 means a 32 inch waist in either system. The conversion that matters is US to EU, where EU equals the waist plus 16. Women’s jeans use a different scale entirely, where US, UK, and EU numbers all differ.
The tape says 33 but the label says 32. Which is right?
Both, in a sense. Vanity sizing means many brands label generously: a W32 on the tag can measure 33 inches or more on the tape. Convert from your body measurement, not from a garment’s label, and expect the tag number to run one size optimistic in many brands.
Does inseam convert between countries?
No. Inseam is measured in inches everywhere, so there is nothing to convert. The converter echoes your inseam next to the converted waist so you get the complete pair, like 32×32, in one step.
What if my waist is an odd number, like 33?
Jeans are charted in even waists, so the tool snaps odd entries to the nearest charted size and tells you which way it rounded. If you sit exactly between, the brand’s own chart and how you like your fit decide: rigid denim relaxes with wear, stretch forgives a snug start.
Why do women’s jeans sizes differ so much from men’s?
They are separate numbering traditions: women’s US 24 to 34 against men’s W28 to W44, with different UK and EU offsets. Convert within the women’s table and do not mix the two; a women’s 28 and a men’s W28 are unrelated numbers.
