How to measure your foot at home
  1. Place a blank sheet of paper on a hard floor, against a wall.
  2. Stand on it with your heel touching the wall, weight evenly distributed. Wear the socks you’ll use.
  3. Mark the paper at the tip of your longest toe.
  4. Measure from the wall edge to the mark in centimetres, do both feet and use the longer one.
  5. Add 0.5–1 cm of wiggle room (a thumb’s width for running shoes), then find that length in the converter.
Tables cross-checked · Last reviewed October 2026
Conversion tables compiled from Nike’s official size charts and cross-checked against adidas, StockX and independent retailer chart mirrors. Brand lasts vary, so treat conversions as a starting point: when between sizes, size up for running shoes and check the brand’s own chart before buying. Note: some charts list US Men’s 9 as EU 42; Nike lists EU 42.5. We follow Nike and flag brand variance.

How do I convert US shoe size to UK, EU, and JP?

Pick the size you already wear in the converter above, it returns the matching UK, EU, and JP (Mondo) size immediately. If you prefer to read a chart, the logic is fixed: each system expresses the same foot length on a different scale, and this reference table maps each listed US size to matching UK, EU and JP labels for the selected category.

Worked example 1 (men’s): A men’s US 9 converts to UK 8, EU 42.5, and JP 27.0. Ordering from a British retailer? Select UK 8.

Worked example 2 (women’s): A women’s US 8 converts to UK 5.5, EU 39, and JP 25.0. Ordering from a European store? Select EU 39.

What is the difference between US, UK, and EU shoe sizes?

The three systems measure foot length in different units, starting from different zero points.

US and UK sizes are measured in barleycorns (one third of an inch per whole size) but each system starts counting from a different zero point. That offset is why the same foot gets a different number in each system.

EU sizes are measured in Paris points, where one Paris point equals two-thirds of a centimeter. The EU scale runs on its own numbering (35, 36, 37…) with no direct relationship to the US/UK numbers, which is why EU 42.5 tells you nothing intuitive if you wear a US 9.

JP (Mondo) sizing labels shoes by foot length in centimeters, but the labeled number is not your measured foot length. A men’s US 9 converts to JP 27.0, while the chart foot length for that size is 26.2 cm. Brands build in room, so treat the JP label as a starting point.

No. For men, a US size runs about 0.5 to 1 size larger than the UK equivalent. A men’s US 9 is a UK 8. For women, the gap is wider: about 2 to 2.5 sizes. A women’s US 8 is a UK 5.5 on Nike’s charts. Always convert rather than assuming the number transfers.

Are UK and US shoe sizes the same?

Accurate as starting points, not as guarantees. A conversion chart maps foot length to a size number correctly, but it cannot account for the shoe’s last, the foot-shaped form each brand builds around. Two brands can label the same foot length differently, and widths vary on top of that, so real-world fit typically varies by about half a size between brands.

That is why this page’s tables are compiled from Nike’s official size charts and cross-checked against adidas and StockX rather than copied from a random blog: the numbers are verified, dated, and traceable. Use the converter to find your equivalent size, then confirm against the specific brand’s chart before ordering, particularly for running shoes and narrow or wide fits.

How do I convert women's shoe sizes to men's?

Subtract 1.5 from the women’s US size to get the men’s US equivalent. A women’s US 8 is a men’s US 6.5; a women’s US 9 is a men’s US 7.5.

Once you have the men’s US size, convert it to UK, EU, or JP exactly as above. The systems work the same regardless of gender; only the US starting number differs.

What does Mondo (JP) sizing mean?

Mondo point sizing (labeled JP on most charts) labels shoe size by foot length in centimeters. But the labeled number is not your measured foot length: on this page’s chart, a men’s US 9 converts to JP 27.0, and the foot length listed for that size is 26.2 cm. The gap is the room brands build in. It is the most direct of the systems: no barleycorns, no Paris points, no historical zero points to decode. If you know your foot length in centimeters, you have a good starting point for your Mondo size, but check the brand’s chart before ordering.

Should I size up in running shoes?

Usually yes, about half a size up from your everyday shoe size. Feet swell during runs, and the right fit leaves roughly a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the shoe’s front. For the full framework (swelling, gait, width, and surface), see our running shoe sizing guide.

How do I measure my foot at home?

Measure in the evening, when feet are at their largest: stand on paper, trace each foot, and measure heel to longest toe in centimeters, using the larger foot. For the complete step-by-step process with photos, see our how to measure your foot at home guide.

Do sizes differ between brands?

Yes. Brands build shoes on different lasts, so the same labeled size can fit differently. This is why conversions are starting points, not promises. For why lasts differ, how vanity sizing creeps in, and how to read brand charts, see why shoe sizes differ by brand.

Frequently asked questions

What do the C and Y suffixes mean in kids’ sizes? C marks children’s (toddler/little-kid) sizes and Y marks youth sizes. They are separate scales, not interchangeable with adult numbers. For the full children’s sizing logic, see our kids’ shoe size chart.

What do wide and narrow widths mean? US widths run from narrow (AA) through medium (D for men, B for women) to wide (2E) and beyond. Length conversion stays the same; width is a separate attribute of fit. If a brand’s medium feels tight, look for its wide offering rather than sizing up in length.

Should I round up or down on half sizes? If you fall between sizes, round up for running and athletic shoes (room for swelling) and try both for dress shoes, where a snugger fit is normal.

My converted size doesn’t match the brand’s chart. Which do I trust? Trust the brand’s chart. Conversion tables map between standardized systems; individual brands adjust their lasts deliberately. Use our converter to get close, then confirm on the brand’s own size page.

Why do some charts list a men’s US 9 as EU 42 and others as EU 42.5? Both exist because brands round the Paris-point scale differently. Nike lists EU 42.5 for a men’s US 9, and this page follows Nike’s chart for consistency. The half-size difference is within normal brand variance, when in doubt, check the brand’s chart.
