Men’s Dress Shirt Size Converter

A dress shirt size converter translates between the two ways men’s dress shirts are labeled: numeric sizes like 15.5/34–35 (neck and sleeve in inches) and alpha sizes like M or XL. Enter your neck and sleeve measurements, a neck size, or an alpha size in the tool below to get your match. For every other size and fit conversion on the site, see our size and fit converters.

How to measure for a dress shirt
  • Neck: wrap the tape around the base of your neck where a collar would sit, then add half an inch for comfort. If you land between half sizes, round up.
  • Sleeve: start at the center back of your neck, run the tape over your shoulder, and down to your wrist bone with your arm slightly bent.
  • Measure over bare skin or a thin undershirt, and compare with the specific brand’s chart before ordering, especially between sizes.
Tables cross-checked · Last reviewed October 2026
Neck and sleeve anchors verified against Kohl’s / Van Heusen’s published men’s dress shirt chart, cross-checked with Tapered Menswear and Nimble Made. Alpha boundaries differ slightly between brands, so the alpha mapping shown is the verified consensus, not a universal law. Centimeter values are direct unit conversions (1 inch = 2.54 cm). A brand’s own chart is always the final word for that brand’s shirts.

Dress shirt size conversion chart

Alpha sizes group neck measurements into bands, and each neck size pairs with more than one sleeve length. Use the table for a quick lookup, then pick the sleeve option that matches your arm measurement.

Neck ranges are the verified consensus of published retailer charts. Sleeve length is chosen independently of alpha size, so always match it to your arm measurement rather than your letter size. Alpha boundaries differ slightly by brand, which is why the alpha column is a consensus starting point, not a law.

How to measure for a dress shirt

Take both measurements over bare skin or a thin undershirt, with the tape snug but not tight. A flexible tape measure works best.

Neck

Wrap the tape around the base of your neck, where a shirt collar would sit. Note the measurement, then add half an inch for comfort: that number is your neck size. If the result lands between half sizes, round up.

Sleeve

Start at the center back of your neck, run the tape over your shoulder, and down to your wrist bone with your arm slightly bent. This gives your sleeve length.

Numeric vs alpha shirt sizes

A numeric size like 15.5/34–35 is two measurements: a 15.5-inch neck and a 34–35-inch sleeve. It is the more precise label, and it is how most dress shirts are actually sold. An alpha size like M groups a range of neck and sleeve measurements into one letter. As a worked example, 15.5/34–35 sits in the Medium band.

Slim vs classic fit

Neck and sleeve sizes stay the same across fits; slim and classic differ in the body of the shirt. A slim fit tapers through the waist and body, while a classic fit gives more room through the chest and waist. Choose your neck and sleeve first, then pick the fit that matches your build and preference.

  • Between neck sizes? Size up. A slightly roomy collar beats a tight one.
  • Fit does not change your measurements. If 16/34–35 is your size, it is your size in both fits.

Why the same shirt size fits differently by brand

Brands cut to their own blocks, so a 16/34–35 from one maker can wear slightly differently than another’s. Alpha sizes vary even more: one brand’s S can be another’s M. Use the converted size as your starting point, then confirm against the specific brand’s chart before buying.

Dress shirt shopping tips

  • The collar should allow one finger between the collar and your neck.
  • With a jacket, about half an inch of shirt cuff should show past the jacket sleeve.
  • Check the care label before washing: cotton shirts can shrink, which is one reason a precise starting size matters.
  • Re-measure if your weight has changed noticeably since you last bought shirts.

How our shirt size tables are verified

Every neck and sleeve value on this page was compiled from published retailer and manufacturer size charts and cross-checked in October 2026. Where brands disagree on alpha boundaries, the table reflects the verified consensus and says so. Centimeter values are direct unit conversions (1 inch = 2.54 cm). A retailer’s own chart is always the final word for that retailer’s shirts.
